Why Smaller Networking Events Lead to Better Connections

When did networking become a numbers game?

We often judge a networking event by how many people attended, how many introductions we made or how many new LinkedIn connections we gained.

But more connections do not necessarily mean better connections.

At a large networking event, it is easy to spend the evening moving quickly from one introduction to another. You exchange names, job titles and perhaps a few words about what you do before moving on to the next person.

There is certainly value in that kind of reach. But there is another approach to networking: creating the time and space for conversations to go deeper.

Depth over volume

In a smaller gathering, there is less pressure to meet everyone as quickly as possible.

You have time to ask better questions, understand what someone is working on, exchange experiences and discover where your interests might overlap.

The value may come from meeting a potential client or collaborator. But it can just as easily come from hearing a different perspective, learning something useful or being introduced to someone you would never have met within your usual professional circle.

Sometimes one real conversation can be worth more than twenty introductions.

The environment matters

Where and how people meet also influences the quality of the interaction.

A comfortable setting, a manageable group size and an atmosphere without constant pitching can make it easier for people to move beyond transactional networking.

When people feel they have the time to talk rather than perform, conversations tend to become more natural.

Networking, therefore, should not only be about who is in the room. The setting and atmosphere we create around people matter just as much.

The real value often comes afterwards

Not every valuable connection produces an immediate business opportunity.

Someone you meet today may introduce you to another person months later. A conversation may spark an idea. A new connection may become a collaborator, client, supplier, adviser or simply someone whose perspective you value.

Good networking creates the starting point. The relationship develops afterwards.

The thinking behind Distinct Innovators

We intentionally keep our gatherings small and bring together entrepreneurs and professionals from different fields.

There are no presentations and no expectation to pitch. The focus is simply on creating the right conditions for genuine conversation, knowledge exchange and new professional connections.

Because when the right people come together, knowledge flows and possibilities expand.

The next Distinct Innovators takes place on 24 September 2026 in Zürich.
